STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO BECOME A DOCTOR IN THE UK
Are you a graduate doctor with a dream to live and work in the UK? Look no further! In this blog post I’ll dissect for you the step-by-step process you need to take in order to have a doctor’s license to practice and move to the UK.
1. Take IELTS/OET exam
The first thing you need to do is pass an English language academic test like IELTS or OET. In order to proceed with your process, you need to pass your IELTS/OET with a minimal of 7.0 general for IELTS and 350 in all 4 sections for OET. They are timed tests that assess your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in the English language.
2. Enrol with GMC
Following your positive results from IELTS/OET, you’re ready to register with the GMC (general medical council). You have to submit your results from IELTS/OET, proof of your medical formation, your passport and then pay a fee.
3. Schedule and take your PLAB 1 test
After registering with the GMC, you can schedule your PLAB 1 test. PLAB 1 is a multiple question theory test that will assess your medical knowledge. There are 180 questions about different scenarios in the medical sector. You’ll have 3 hours to complete it. This test is held quarterly, and it takes 6 weeks for the results to come.
4. Take your PLAB 2 test
After the 6 weeks, if you passed your PLAB 1 test you are ready to schedule your PLAB 2 test. PLAB 2 is a practical test that will evaluate your practical medical skills. It consists of 16 scenarios, each lasting eight minutes, and is designed to mimic real-life circumstances such as a mock consultation or an urgent ward. You’ll have 3 hours to complete it. Your results will arrive after 4 weeks.
5. Get your doctor’s license
After passing your PLAB 2, you’re ready to apply for your doctor’s license with the GMC!
